Botulinum toxin for excessive sweating and underarm odor
In this treatment, botulinum toxin is injected in small amounts across the area that sweats heavily. It is known to reduce, for a period of time, the nerve signals that drive the sweat glands.
Miri Clinic describes botulinum toxin as a treatment that may help with excessive sweating (hyperhidrosis) and underarm odor. The area and dose are decided in a one-on-one consultation.

About Botulinum Toxin for Hyperhidrosis & Underarm Odor
Botulinum toxin for hyperhidrosis and underarm odor is a treatment in which botulinum toxin is injected for people who sweat excessively or are concerned about sweat odor, with the hope of reducing the amount of sweat for a while. Miri Clinic presents botulinum toxin as a treatment that may be expected to help not only with wrinkle and muscle concerns but also with hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating), underarm odor and more. The treatment area and dose are decided at a one-on-one consultation, and because the cost depends on the area and dose, it is provided after your consultation.
How are hyperhidrosis and underarm odor different?
Hyperhidrosis is known as a condition in which you sweat more than is needed to regulate body temperature, and it is known to commonly appear in the armpits, palms and soles of the feet.
Underarm odor is known as a condition in which sweat from areas such as the armpits meets bacteria on the skin and the smell becomes stronger. Some people have both concerns and some have only one, so we first check at your consultation which discomfort is greater.
How does botulinum toxin act on sweating?
Sweat glands produce sweat when they receive signals from nerves. Botulinum toxin is known to reduce the release of the substance that carries this signal for a while, so less sweat is produced where it is injected.
Because it does not remove the sweat glands themselves, the signals are known to return over time and sweating to increase again. That is why it is managed by having the treatment again when the effect wears off.
Does it also help with underarm odor?
Sweat odor is known to form when sweat meets bacteria while it stays on the skin, so less sweat may help you notice the odor less.
However, the cause and degree of the odor differ from person to person, so whether botulinum toxin alone is enough or other methods should also be considered is checked at your appointment.
Which areas can be treated?
The treatment area is decided at your consultation after hearing where you sweat a lot and the discomfort it causes in daily life. Skin thickness and surrounding muscles differ by area, so the amount and method also differ; if you have an area in mind, please tell us at your consultation.
What are the steps of botulinum toxin for hyperhidrosis?
- Consultation — we hear where and how much you sweat and when you feel discomfort, and decide the treatment range and amount.
- Numbing cream or cold pack — if you are worried about stinging, numbing cream or a cold pack is applied first as needed.
- Injection — small amounts are injected with a fine needle at many points within the chosen range.
- Finishing — the injection sites are checked, you are told the aftercare points, and you go home. The time it takes depends on the area and range, and we will let you know at your consultation.
When will I feel the effect, and how long does it last?
Miri Clinic advises that the effect of botulinum toxin lasts 2–6 months depending on the area, and that regular care is important.
For hyperhidrosis and underarm odor, when you start to feel the effect and how long it lasts depend on the area, the amount of sweat and the individual, so we explain this together at your consultation.
What are the common reactions, and what may rarely happen?
You may feel a sting during the injection, the injection sites may briefly swell and redden, and small bruises may form. These reactions are known to usually settle with time.
Rarely, the muscles around the injection site are known to feel weaker for a while. What to know differs by area, so we explain it at your consultation; if discomfort keeps getting worse, please contact the clinic.
What should I be careful about before and after the procedure?
Please let us know before your consultation if you have a wound or dermatitis at the injection site, take blood-thinning medication, or are pregnant or breastfeeding.
Right after the procedure, it is known to be best not to rub or massage the injection sites hard. Please follow the aftercare instructions for when you can resume care that touches the injection sites, such as deodorant or hair removal.
How much does botulinum toxin for hyperhidrosis and underarm odor cost?
It depends on the area and dose, so no amount is listed separately on the price list. We will let you know the cost after the area and amount are decided at your consultation.
Your exact diagnosis and treatment plan are decided at your consultation.
FAQ
Is heavy sweating something to see a doctor about?
If you sweat so much that it is uncomfortable in daily life, you can come in for a consultation. The reason for increased sweating may also be related to another condition, so at your consultation we look at it together with the discomfort in your daily life before deciding on an approach.
After one treatment, will I keep sweating less?
Botulinum toxin is known not to remove the sweat glands but to reduce the signals for a while, so sweating may increase again over time. Whether to have it again and at what interval are decided at your consultation based on how long the effect lasted.
Do some people have it before the sweatier season?
Some people want to have it timed for the season when they sweat more or for an important event. It may take time before you feel the effect, so if you have a timing in mind, please tell us at your consultation.
Are there other options besides botulinum toxin?
For hyperhidrosis and underarm odor, several approaches are known to exist, such as topical products, procedures and surgery. The options available at Miri Clinic and the one that suits you are explained at your consultation.
