About Sculptra

Sculptra is an injectable collagen stimulator made of PLLA (Poly-L-lactic acid). It is a treatment that stimulates collagen to form within the skin, aiming to improve facial wrinkles, firmness and lift. It may be worth considering if your skin is thin and has lost firmness, if weight loss has made your face look hollow, or if you want a change that does not look artificial; numbing cream is applied, and local anesthesia is added when needed before the injection. Miri Clinic's price list includes a Sculptra 1 cc item.

What happens inside the skin after the injection?

Sculptra is known to be injected as powdered PLLA mixed with water. The volume seen right after the injection is mainly due to the water injected with it and swelling, so as these go down, it may look as though the volume has decreased for a while.

After that, collagen is known to form gradually around the PLLA particles, so changes may appear little by little over time. We advise that the ingredient breaks down gradually over 24 months after injection. The degree of collagen change and how long it lasts vary with age, skin condition and lifestyle.

Who is it for?

Sculptra is generally used when the skin is thin and has lost firmness, or when volume has decreased over a wide area, such as a so-called “peanut-shaped” face where rapid dieting has caused facial fat loss and the areas below the cheekbones and the temples look hollow. It may suit people who want a gradual change rather than one that is immediately noticeable.

If your goal is to fill one spot distinctly, as with filler, another method may suit you better, so it helps to describe the change you want specifically at your consultation. If you have inflammation or a wound on the skin, are pregnant or breastfeeding, or tend to form raised scars such as keloids, please tell us in advance at your consultation.

How is Sculptra done on the day?

On the day, Sculptra is done in four steps: consultation, anesthesia preparation, injection and massage instructions.

  • Consultation — we check the hollow areas, skin thickness and your past filler or lifting history, and decide where and how much to inject.
  • Anesthesia preparation — after washing your face, numbing cream is applied and you wait, and local anesthesia is also used depending on the area.
  • Injection — the product is injected at several points in the chosen area so that it spreads evenly.
  • Massage instructions and going home — the treated area is checked, you are shown how to massage at home, and you go home. The injection takes about 20–30 minutes, with separate time for anesthesia; the steps and times are a general guide and may vary from person to person.

Why is massage needed after the procedure?

Massaging the treated area for about 5 days after the procedure is recommended so that the injected ingredient spreads evenly rather than clumping in one place. Please follow the aftercare instructions for how often and how to do it.

It is best to massage evenly with the pressure you were shown rather than pressing hard, and if you are unsure how to do it, please ask the clinic. If it hurts or swelling gets worse while massaging, stop and contact the clinic.

What about pain, recovery and possible reactions?

It is done after anesthesia, but you may feel a dull ache or pressure during the injection, and how much you feel varies from person to person. Swelling and bruising are common and settle over several days.

A dull ache is also a common reaction, and rarely a small lump may be felt under the skin or blood-vessel problems may occur. If the treated area becomes increasingly painful or the skin changes color, please contact the clinic right away.

How many sessions is it split into?

Because collagen takes time to form, it is generally done in 2–3 sessions at intervals of about 3–4 weeks or more. The number of sessions and amount needed depend on how hollow the area is and your skin condition, and are decided at your consultation.

Rather than deciding the next treatment right after one session, it is best to set the next date while watching how the change develops. The amount injected in each session is also decided again based on the change at that time.

How much does Sculptra cost?

Sculptra 1 cc is ₩89,000, plus 10% VAT on cosmetic procedures. The amount and number of sessions needed are listed as “on request” on the price list, so please check them at your consultation.

Your exact diagnosis and treatment plan are decided at your consultation.

FAQ

What is Sculptra?

Sculptra is an injectable collagen stimulator made of PLLA (poly-L-lactic acid). It helps the body produce its own collagen, with the aim of improving facial wrinkles, firmness and lift. The product is approved by the US FDA and is gradually broken down by the body after injection.

When does Sculptra start to show results, and how long do they last?

Unlike filler, it does not add volume right away. It relies on new collagen forming gradually, so changes may appear little by little over time. The ingredient breaks down gradually over 24 months after injection. How long results last, and the amount and number of sessions you need, vary from person to person, so we explain this during your consultation.

How is Sculptra different from filler?

Filler fills the injected area right away, while Sculptra stimulates your own skin to make collagen. We suggest it for people with thin skin and reduced firmness, people whose face has lost volume after weight loss, and anyone who wants a change that does not look artificial.

The price is per 1 cc. How many cc will I need?

The amount needed depends on the size and degree of the hollow area, and the price list also states “amount and number of sessions on request”. It is decided after the area is checked at your appointment.

What if I miss a day of massage?

If you miss a day, continue for the remaining period as you were instructed, and ask the clinic about anything that worries you. If you feel a lump, do not press it hard yourself; please have it checked at the clinic.

Can I have Sculptra in an area where I've had filler?

Some people have it in areas with past treatments such as filler or a thread lift, but it depends on the remaining ingredient and the interval between treatments. Please tell us the type and date of your past treatments at your consultation.

Is there anything I should avoid after the procedure?

Positions that press on the treated area for a long time, facial massage devices, and a lot of heat such as saunas can increase swelling, so it is best to be careful for a while. Please follow the aftercare instructions for when you can start other care besides the home massage.
