About Ultherapy PRIME

Ultherapy PRIME is an ultrasound lifting device that focuses ultrasound energy down to the deeper layers of the skin. It is done without incisions by applying the device to the skin surface, with numbing cream used when needed. It may suit people whose jawline has started to blur and whose skin beside the mouth or under the chin has begun to look loose. Miri Clinic's price list includes Ultherapy PRIME 100-shot and 300-shot items.

Ultherapy PRIME and 10THERMA are both lifting devices that require no incisions, but Ultherapy PRIME focuses ultrasound on a single point in a deep layer, while 10THERMA delivers radiofrequency (RF) heat over a wider area. Combination prices for having both are listed separately under “Recommended Combinations” below. Ultherapy PRIME is an Ulthera-line device made by Merz in the United States.

Ultherapy PRIME is known as a device that lets the practitioner see the skin layers on a screen during treatment and choose the depth the ultrasound reaches. Areas with thin skin, such as the forehead and around the eyes, and areas with thicker skin, such as under the chin, are treated separately at different depths.

Which skin layers does it reach?

Ultrasound lifting is generally known to pass through the skin surface and focus ultrasound in deeper layers — the dermis and the fascia layer (SMAS) covering the facial muscles — creating small heat points. Tissue around the heat points firms up and collagen is known to be replenished over time, which may help tidy a loosened facial contour.

The fascia layer is known as the layer that supports the shape of the face, and since skin thickness differs by area, the depth at which ultrasound is focused is also chosen to suit each area. When and how much change shows varies from person to person with skin condition.

What is the difference between 100 and 300 shots?

A shot is one pulse of ultrasound; more shots cover a wider area and take longer. The price list has 100 shots and 300 shots, and which suits you is decided at your consultation based on the extent of loosening and skin thickness.

With more shots, such as 300, the treatment takes correspondingly longer, so whether to use numbing cream is also decided at your consultation. Whether to treat a wide area at once or concentrate on the areas that bother you is discussed then as well.

Who might benefit from a consultation?

Whether an Ultherapy PRIME consultation is worthwhile depends not only on the degree of loosening but also on skin thickness, previous lifting history and the fact that some redness may remain briefly after treatment.

Ultrasound lifting is generally considered when sagging is mild to moderate and surgery with incisions still feels like too much. If loosening is advanced or the skin is very thin, we look at your skin condition at your consultation and decide on the right method.

How does the day of treatment go?

Consultation and choosing areas — based on the extent of loosening and skin thickness, we choose between 100 and 300 shots and decide where to divide them.
Preparation — after cleansing, we mark the treatment areas and, if needed, apply numbing cream and wait for it to take effect.
Ultrasound delivery — gel is applied to the skin and the device is placed on it to deliver ultrasound at the depth and number of shots set for each area.
Finishing — we wipe off the gel, check your skin and you go home. The treatment takes about 30⁠–⁠90 minutes depending on the number of shots, plus time for numbing if used; the steps and times are a general guide and may vary from person to person.

What does it feel like during and after treatment?

At the moment the ultrasound focuses, you may feel a sting or a heavy, resonating sensation, which may be stronger near bone. How much you feel varies from person to person, so numbing cream is used when needed.

Redness, swelling and a dull ache are common after treatment, and rarely bruising or temporary numbness may occur. The treated area may feel sore for a while when pressed; if numbness or pain lasts a long time, please contact the clinic.

When can I wear makeup, and when is the next treatment?

Redness usually settles after a while, so many people carry on with daily life the same day, and makeup is generally said to be fine on the day of treatment. However, skin reactions vary, so if redness lasts, it is best to wait until your skin has calmed down.

After one treatment, you see how it goes, and about once a year we check at a consultation whether another treatment is needed. How long the change lasts depends on age, skin thickness and the degree of sagging, so it is hard to give one answer; telling us the number of shots and areas from last time at your next consultation helps with planning.

How long does the soreness last after treatment?

Soreness usually eases with time, but how long it lasts varies by person and area. If it keeps getting worse or numbness lasts a long time along with it, please have it checked at the clinic.

I have had other lifting treatments before — can I have it?

Whether you can and the interval depend on the type and timing of your previous treatments and your current skin condition. Tell us what you had and when at your consultation, and we will decide accordingly.

Is there anything to prepare before the treatment?

It helps your consultation if you bring a list of the medications you take and recent treatments. If inflammation or a wound appears in the treatment area, please let the clinic know before your appointment date.
