About Mole Removal

Mole removal is a procedure that aims to take away a mole on the skin and help the spot heal evenly, like the surrounding skin. It may suit people who have a bothersome mole on the face or body that they want removed. It is done after applying numbing cream, with a local anesthetic injection added when needed. Healing tape is placed over the spot where the mole was removed while new skin fills in. Miri Clinic's price list includes mole removal.

How is a mole removed?

A laser is generally used for mole removal, and it is known to work by shallowly removing the area where the pigment cells that make up the mole gather. How deep the removal goes depends on how far into the skin the mole sits, and depth is considered as much as the mole's size when deciding how to proceed.

Some moles look small on the surface but have deep roots, and removing too much depth at once can leave a scar, so controlling the depth is important. For this reason, deep moles are sometimes treated in stages, re-examining the skin after it has healed.

What is checked before a mole is removed?

Before removal, we check the mole's size, depth and location, and also explain in advance how long you will need to wear healing tape after it is removed.

Most moles are common pigmented nevi, but a mole with an irregular shape, a mix of colors, or one that has recently grown suddenly or bleeds may be different from an ordinary mole. Rather than removing such a mole right away, it is better to have it examined at a consultation first to see whether it needs separate evaluation.

Please tell us at your consultation if you tend to form raised scars such as keloids, are pregnant, or take blood-thinning medication. It also helps to let us know if the area where the mole will be removed has recently been heavily tanned by the sun.

What happens on the day of mole removal?

  • Consultation — we check the size, depth and number of moles to be removed, and decide the cost and how to proceed.
  • Anesthesia — after cleansing, numbing cream is applied where the mole is, and a local anesthetic injection is added if needed.
  • Removing the mole — the mole is removed little by little according to its depth, checking that no pigment remains.
  • Healing tape and going home — healing tape is placed over the treated spot, and you go home after hearing how to care for it. It takes about 10–20 minutes depending on the number of moles, plus separate time for anesthesia. The order and timing are general guidance and may vary from person to person.

What does healing tape do?

Where a mole has been removed, the skin surface is open, so healing tape covers it to block outside irritation and dust and help new skin fill in under moist conditions. The tape is worn for about 1–2 weeks and changed every 2–3 days; please follow the aftercare instructions for details on how to use it.

After the tape comes off, the spot may look redder or pinker than the surrounding skin, and it gets closer to the surrounding skin tone over time. How quickly it fades varies from person to person.

What reactions can occur after the procedure?

Scabs and red marks are common and usually settle over time. It is best not to pick off scabs but to let them fall off on their own. Rarely, the spot may darken with hyperpigmentation, a scar may remain, or the mole may become visible again.

If the mole becomes visible again, we re-examine it after the skin has fully healed and decide whether to proceed. If redness and pain keep getting worse, or you notice warmth or pus, please contact the clinic right away.

What should I be careful about while the red mark remains?

Newly formed skin is vulnerable to UV, and heavy sun exposure while the red mark remains is known to make hyperpigmentation more likely. After the tape comes off, it is best to apply sunscreen and cover up with a hat or parasol.

It is best to hold off on scratching the spot or using irritating products such as exfoliants or scrubs until the redness has settled. Please follow the aftercare instructions on when you can start wearing makeup on that spot.

How is the cost of mole removal decided?

The price list shows mole removal at ₩10,000 along with the note “price varies by size · exact cost set after consultation”, plus 10% VAT on cosmetic procedures. Because the cost depends on the size of the mole, please confirm it after the mole has been examined at your consultation.

If you plan to have several moles removed, the cost is set by looking at the number and size of the moles together, so it helps to show us all the moles that bother you at your consultation.

Your exact diagnosis and treatment plan are decided at your consultation.

FAQ

Can a mole be removed in one session?

Whatever its size, a mole that sits deep in the skin may need several sessions.

How long should I use the healing tape?

While the skin heals, a whitish fluid may collect under the tape; this is a common part of healing. Use the tape for at least 1 week and up to 2 weeks, changing it every 2 to 3 days. (Changing it too often can irritate the skin. If you notice redness or itching, please contact the clinic.)

Is there anything I should avoid?

Avoid swimming pools and saunas. (While using the tape, or if a scab forms, avoid soaking the area in water for long until it heals.)

When can I have another mole removed?

After the skin has healed: at least 1 month later, as long as there is no redness left.

Can several moles be removed at once?

Several moles are sometimes removed at once, but as the number grows, the procedure time and the number of spots to care for with healing tape grow as well. The number and location of moles to remove are decided together at your consultation.

Does mole removal hurt?

It is done after applying numbing cream, with a local anesthetic injection added if needed, but the anesthetic injection may sting, and how it feels differs from person to person. If you are worried about pain, please tell us before the procedure.

Can moles on the body, not just the face, be removed?

The price list describes it as “mole removal on the areas you choose”, so moles on areas other than the face can also be discussed at a consultation. Skin thickness and healing speed differ by area, so whether to proceed and how to care for it are decided at your consultation.

Can I wear makeup where the mole was removed?

While wearing healing tape, it is best to avoid that spot when applying makeup. When you can start wearing makeup on that spot after the tape comes off depends on how well the skin has healed; please follow the aftercare instructions.

What if the spot where the mole was removed darkens?

Rarely, dark hyperpigmentation may appear as the red mark fades. Keep up sun protection and watch it, but if it lasts a long time or gets darker, please have it checked at the clinic.
