About Women’s Laser Hair Removal

Women's laser hair removal uses laser light absorbed by the pigment in hair to deliver heat toward the hair root, aiming to reduce the hair's ability to grow back. It may suit people who are conscious of their underarms when wearing sleeveless tops, or who find it a hassle to shave or wax large areas such as the calves and arms often. Numbing cream is applied if needed, and the laser is then applied for about 5–20 minutes depending on the area. Miri Clinic's price list includes 5-session items for the underarms, upper lip, calves and forearms.

How does laser hair removal reduce hair?

Laser hair removal generally works on the principle that the melanin pigment in hair absorbs the laser light, and the heat produced is transferred to the hair follicle that makes the hair. That's why darker, thicker hair absorbs the light well, while very light-colored vellus hair or white hair is known to respond less.

Laser hair removal does not remove all hair at once; it aims to reduce the amount and thickness of hair that grows back. How much hair remains differs from person to person depending on the area, the nature of the hair and your body's condition.

How do the underarms, upper lip, calves and forearms differ?

The four areas on the price list differ in both size and the nature of the hair. The underarms tend to have thick, dark hair and are known to respond well to the laser, while the calves and forearms (the arm below the elbow) cover a large area, so the laser takes longer to apply.

Upper-lip hair is often fine and light in color, so how much change you notice may vary with the thickness and color of the hair. Please have your hair type, and how far the laser covers in each area, checked in person at your appointment.

Why is it done in 5 sessions?

Hair grows in cycles, moving through an active growth phase, a phase where growth stops, and a shedding phase. The laser is known to work mainly on actively growing hair, but not all hairs are in that phase at the same time, so having several sessions at intervals is the usual approach.

The interval is often set at about 4 to 8 weeks depending on the area, and may be longer for areas where hair grows slowly, such as the calves and arms. The date of your next session is decided by looking at how the hair is growing back.

What should I do to prepare before the procedure?

Because the laser targets the pigment in the hair root, it is known to be best to pause methods that remove hair from the root — such as plucking with tweezers, waxing or hair-removal creams — during the treatment period. Hair is often tidied by shaving; please follow the instructions given when you booked for when to shave before you come.

Tanned skin is more prone to skin color changes after laser treatment, so it's best to take care with sun protection during the treatment period. Please tell us in advance if you are pregnant or have a wound or inflammation in the area to be treated.

What happens on the day of the procedure?

  • Area check — we check the hair and skin color in the area to be treated and whether you have been tanned recently, and decide the area to cover.
  • Preparation and anesthesia — we trim any remaining hair short and, if needed, apply numbing cream and wait for it to take effect.
  • Laser — you wear protective eyewear, and the laser is applied evenly over the chosen area. It takes about 5–20 minutes depending on the area, with extra time for anesthesia.
  • Soothing and going home — we soothe the treated area, check your skin and you go home. The steps and times are a general guide and may vary from person to person.

What is my skin like after the procedure?

It is common for the treated area to turn red or for each pore to swell into a small bump, and this usually settles within a few hours. Rarely, blisters may form or the skin may darken or lighten, so if the stinging keeps getting worse or you see blisters, please contact the clinic right away.

While the skin is red, it's best to avoid things that heat up the skin, such as exercise that makes you sweat a lot, saunas or hot baths. Hair treated with the laser often doesn't disappear right away but sheds little by little over time, so it's best to leave it rather than pulling it out.

How much does women's laser hair removal cost?

Underarm hair removal (5 sessions) is ₩49,000, upper lip (5 sessions) is ₩39,000, calves (5 sessions) is ₩240,000 and forearms (5 sessions) is ₩190,000, plus 10% VAT on cosmetic procedures. The plan that suits your areas and hair condition is decided at your consultation.

FAQ

When should I start to be ready for sleeveless season?

Laser hair removal is done over several sessions about 4 to 8 weeks apart depending on the area, so completing 5 sessions takes a few months. It's best to start well ahead of when you want to wear sleeveless clothes, and please take care not to get tanned during the treatment period.

Can I have the procedure during my period?

Whether you can have it is decided by looking at your skin condition on the day. Some people find their skin more sensitive than usual at this time, so if you think it may be uncomfortable, please let us know in advance that you would like to move your appointment.

What if hair grows back after the 5 sessions?

How much hair remains differs from person to person depending on the area, the thickness and color of the hair, and body conditions such as hormones. After the 5 sessions, we watch how the hair grows and decide at your consultation whether to have more.

Can I have two or more areas done on the same day?

If you'd like several areas done in one day, please mention it when you book. The larger the area, the longer the laser takes, so which areas to treat that day and in what order is decided by looking at your skin condition.
